Evaporator Coils

Evaporator coils are the indoor heat exchangers that move cold air through a chilled room or freezer room, so the product has to match the room size, duty cycle and door openings. Coastal Cooling Systems supplies and fits ceiling and wall mounted evaporator coils for Durban and the KZN coast, with careful selection for food stores, butcheries, packhouses and cold storage rooms.

What an evaporator coil does in a cold room

An evaporator coil sits inside the room and pulls heat out of the air while the fan throws chilled air back across the space. That air movement is what keeps product temperatures even from the doorway to the back wall, instead of leaving warm corners or frost heavy spots near the ceiling. For a chilled room the coil must maintain steady pull down and good air throw. For a freezer room it must also manage frost build up and keep the room cycling properly when the doors open often.

On the coast, humidity matters. A room in Durban North, Umhlanga or Ballito will load the coil harder than a dry inland site, so coil selection must suit the real operating conditions. A coil that is too small runs long and struggles after load shedding. One that is oversized can short cycle and give poor humidity control, which matters for fresh produce and packaged foods.

Sizes, fan options and coil configurations

Evaporator coils are selected by room volume, room temperature, product load and refrigeration capacity. We supply compact ceiling mounted units for smaller cold rooms, larger ceiling units for medium rooms, and wall mounted units where ceiling space is limited or access for servicing needs to stay clear. Air throw, fin spacing and defrost type all change the final fit. The right coil is not just about size in metres, it is about matching the actual pull down duty.

  • Ceiling mounted units for most walk in cold rooms and freezer rooms
  • Wall mounted units where roof height is limited or overhead services are crowded
  • Single fan, twin fan and multi fan options for different throw distances
  • Fresh food coils with closer fin spacing for chilled rooms
  • Freezer coils with wider drainage and defrost arrangements for low temperature work

Typical applications range from small butcher room units to larger packhouse and distribution room coils. In practice we look at room dimensions, product turnover, door use and whether the room is used for dairy, meat, flowers or frozen stock. That keeps the air moving the right way and reduces hot spots around the evaporator, which is where temperature problems usually start.

Where these coils suit best on the KZN coast

These coils suit restaurants, supermarkets, butchery cold rooms, bakery stores, bottle stores, fruit handling areas and general commercial refrigeration rooms. We also fit them in industrial stores, fisheries support areas and small distribution depots that need dependable chilled storage close to the coast. In places like Glen Anil, Pinetown and the South Coast, salt air and warm ambient conditions can shorten service life if the coil casing, fixings and drain setup are not right.

For a freezer room, a coil needs to move air evenly without blasting product faces with warm return air. For a chilled room, it should hold temperature without excessive fan noise or dry air problems. If the room carries mixed stock, such as dairy with prepacked meat, the coil and controls need to support the colder product safely. We also plan around municipal and site rules where access, noise and condensate drainage are controlled by the landlord or centre manager.

Installation, power and refrigerant connections

Correct installation starts with a solid mounting position, clear service access and a proper condensate fall to drainage. The coil must sit where air can return freely, not hard against a wall or blocked by shelving. We check electrical supply, control wiring, fan motor load and defrost requirements before commissioning. If the room is on a standby generator or through load shedding changeover, the coil and controller setup must recover cleanly when power returns.

  • Mounting brackets and fixings matched to the room structure
  • Drain line with correct fall and trap arrangement where needed
  • Electrical supply sized for fan motors, defrost heaters and controls
  • Refrigerant piping sized for the system capacity and pipe run length
  • Thermostat and control settings set to the target room temperature

Gas charge and pipe work are set by the system design, not by guesswork. A long pipe run to a roof plant room or remote condenser may need adjusted line sizing, oil return checks and careful evacuation before commissioning. If the install is rushed, the coil may ice up or starve, and then the room never settles properly. That is expensive and avoidable.

Care, cleaning and planned servicing

Evaporator coils need regular care because dust, grease and frost all reduce air flow. In food environments the coil should be checked for blocked drains, fan condition, damaged fins and ice bridges across the face. A dirty coil can increase running time, lift power use and cause temperature swings during busy trading hours. On the coast, corrosion on the casing and fasteners also needs attention, especially where washing down happens often.

Our service work includes coil cleaning, defrost checks, leak detection, electrical fault finding, temperature logging and general refrigeration inspection. For freezer rooms we check door seals, heater function and drain performance, because a drain that freezes will give the same trouble again and again. For chilled rooms we look at fan operation, airflow balance and any signs of product drying. Planned maintenance also helps during load shedding events, since systems that start from a clean, healthy state recover better after outages.

What to check when ordering a replacement coil

If you are replacing an evaporator coil, the old unit size alone is not enough. We need the room dimensions, target temperature, type of stock, refrigerant used and the existing compressor or condensing plant details. Photos of the room, ceiling height and drain point help as well. If the room has changed use over time, for example from chilled storage to freezer storage, the coil selection must change too. That part gets missed more often than it should, and then the system struggles from day one.

  • Room length, width and clear height in metres
  • Chilled or frozen room temperature target
  • Door size and how often the room is opened
  • Existing refrigerant type and pipe route length
  • Voltage supply and whether the site runs on generator backup
  • Any corrosion issues, washdown exposure or tight service access

Send the room details and we can advise on the best evaporator coil arrangement for your site in Durban or along the coast. If the room is in Glen Anil, Ballito, Umhlanga, Pinetown or the South Coast, we can assess the install, check the controls and make sure the coil suits the duty before it goes in, rather than sorting out the same fault twice.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

How do I know what size evaporator coil I need?

Room size, target temperature, stock type, door openings and the existing refrigeration capacity all matter. A site visit or proper room details are the safest way to size it.

Can one coil work for both chilled and frozen rooms?

Not usually. Chilled and frozen rooms have different fin spacing, defrost needs and air flow requirements, so the coil must match the room duty.

What causes an evaporator coil to ice up?

Common causes are poor defrost, low gas charge, weak fan performance, blocked drains, dirty fins or warm air entering through damaged door seals.
