Our history

Coastal Cooling Systems began in Glen Anil in 1998, serving Durban businesses that needed dependable refrigeration and air-conditioning support. From those early years to today, the company has grown with the KZN coast while keeping the same practical focus on quick call-outs, planned maintenance and clear communication.

1998: The business starts in Glen Anil

Coastal Cooling Systems was founded in 1998 in Glen Anil, Durban, with a simple aim: keep local businesses running when refrigeration or air-conditioning let them down. In those early years the work was hands-on and often urgent, with calls from shops, butchers, bakeries and small commercial sites that could not afford spoiled stock or uncomfortable staff areas.

The original business built its name through steady service, careful fault finding and proper follow-through. Rather than chasing flashy contracts, the focus stayed on practical work done well, on time and with the customer kept informed. That approach became the foundation for everything that followed.

  • Base established in Glen Anil, Durban
  • Commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning focus
  • Support for local trading businesses and food sites

The early 2000s: Building trust one call-out at a time

As the business grew, more clients came through word of mouth from Durban North, Umhlanga and surrounding areas. The work expanded from straightforward repairs to regular servicing, fault diagnosis and maintenance planning. Many customers wanted someone who could arrive, assess the problem properly and explain the options without wasting time.

Those years shaped the service style that is still in place today. If a cold room was warming up, or a freezer room was struggling after a power cut, the team knew that speed mattered but so did accuracy. The habit of checking refrigerant leaks, electrical faults and control issues became part of the day to day routine.

  • Repeat work grew through referrals
  • Service plans became more common
  • Support widened to shops, offices and industrial sites

2010 to 2015: Bigger systems, stricter standards

By the early 2010s, the business was handling a wider mix of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems across the KZN coast. Clients were asking for more structured maintenance, better temperature control and clearer records for internal audits and compliance. That meant the work had to be more organised, with planned visits, detailed checks and proper reporting.

This period also brought more demand for display chillers, freezer rooms and commercial air-conditioning in busier premises where load-shedding and voltage dips could affect operations. The team adapted by focusing on practical maintenance, fault prevention and early warning signs before a breakdown turned into lost stock or a closed site.

  • Planned maintenance became a key part of the service mix
  • Temperature logging and compliance checks became routine
  • More work came from retail, hospitality and light industrial sites

2016 to 2019: From local service to coastal coverage

As the customer base widened, Coastal Cooling Systems started working more regularly along the coast, including Ballito and the South Coast, while keeping strong ties to Glen Anil, Durban North, Umhlanga and Pinetown. The business kept growing without losing the practical service style that customers had come to rely on.

During these years, the team became more defined and each person took on a clear role. That made it easier to manage service contracts, coordinate emergency call-outs and handle larger projects with less delay. The business history in this period is really about structure, consistency and making sure the right technician got to the right site with the right information.

  • Coverage expanded across Durban and the KZN coast
  • Service contracts became a bigger part of the work
  • Clearer roles improved response times and job tracking

2020 and beyond: Keeping businesses running through pressure

When trading conditions became harder for many businesses, reliable refrigeration and air-conditioning mattered even more. Businesses needed systems that could cope with outages, heat, humidity and the pressure of keeping stock safe. Coastal Cooling Systems continued supporting clients with planned maintenance, breakdown call-outs and practical advice based on what was happening on site.

Today the business is led by Managing Director Sibusiso Mthembu, with Priscilla Naidoo overseeing operations, Themba Dlamini leading refrigeration technical work, Kyle Govender supervising air-conditioning, Zanele Khumalo coordinating service contracts and Aiden Pillay preparing project estimates. That mix of experience means the company can handle day to day service work and larger installations with proper coordination.

  • Support for load-shedding related issues and power recovery checks
  • Maintenance for cold rooms, freezer rooms and display chillers
  • Commercial and industrial air-conditioning support remains central

What has stayed the same since the beginning

Although the company has grown, the core idea has not changed. Coastal Cooling Systems still works the way a proper Durban contractor should: answer the phone, get to site, find the fault and keep the customer informed. That matters in coastal conditions where salt air, humidity and hot summers put extra strain on equipment.

Our history is not only about dates and expansions. It is also about habits that have stayed in place for years, such as checking temperatures properly, spotting electrical issues early and making sure service contracts are followed through. It is the reason many clients stay with the company over the long term.

  • Practical service over years of changing conditions
  • Local knowledge of Durban and KZN coast sites
  • Long-term client relationships built on consistent work
