Pinetown Factory Freezer

This Pinetown project was a low-temperature freezer room built for a food production site that needed more stock-holding space and steadier temperatures through long operating hours. Coastal Cooling Systems handled the design, installation and commissioning, with a focus on practical access, load-shedding readiness and easy day to day use.

Factory Freezer Brief For Higher Stock Holding

The client was a food production facility in Pinetown that had outgrown its existing frozen storage and needed a new room that could take higher stock volumes without pushing product temperatures around during busy receiving and dispatch periods. The old arrangement was costing time, and the site wanted a freezer that could support production runs, bulk holding and faster loading at shift change.

The brief was clear: build a low-temperature freezer room that could hold consistent sub-zero conditions, work reliably in a busy factory environment and allow the team to move product in and out without unnecessary loss. The room also had to fit into the available floor area without blocking pedestrian routes, forklifts or other service access.

  • Site type: food production facility
  • Area: Pinetown, Durban
  • Use: higher-volume frozen stock holding
  • Operating need: stable temperatures during frequent door openings

Constraints On A Busy Production Floor

Like many factory jobs in the greater Durban area, the site had limited downtime and a fixed production rhythm. Work had to be planned around shifts, delivery windows and hygiene controls. There was also the matter of floor loading, because frozen storage stock gets heavy fast once pallets start stacking up.

Another constraint was the local environment. Pinetown can be hot and humid, and that puts extra strain on insulation, doors and refrigeration plant if the room is not set up properly. The client also wanted a solution that would not be thrown off every time the power blipped during load-shedding, so the control approach had to be practical and stable.

  • Limited shutdown windows for installation
  • Hot, humid KZN conditions
  • Need for safe traffic flow around the room
  • Power interruptions and restart planning

What We Supplied And Installed

We supplied and installed a purpose-built freezer room package with insulated panel construction, a hard-wearing insulated door set, refrigeration equipment sized for the room load and the product turnover expected on site. The aim was to give the client a room that could hold temperature properly, recover quickly after access and stay economical to run over the long term.

The evaporator and condensing equipment were matched to the application, with controls set for low-temperature operation and safe cycling. We also included practical items that often get missed on rushed jobs, like door sealing, vapour control and neat service access so the maintenance team can actually get to the plant later without stripping the room apart.

  • Insulated freezer enclosure with vapour-tight detailing
  • Low-temperature refrigeration set for production stock
  • Heavy-duty insulated access door
  • Control setup for stable operation and monitoring

Timeline From Set-Out To Commissioning

The project was completed over 3 weeks from final set-out to handover. Week one covered measurements, load review and preparation, then week two focused on the physical room build and refrigeration installation. The final week covered pressure testing, electrical checks, temperature pull-down and commissioning under real operating conditions.

That kind of schedule suits factory work because it keeps disruption contained and gives the client a clear handover date. It also allows time to sort the details properly, which matters on freezer rooms. A room can look finished but if the door leaf, floor junctions or sensor placement are off, the client pays for it later in lost efficiency and nuisance faults.

  • Week 1: survey, sizing and planning
  • Week 2: room build and equipment installation
  • Week 3: testing, pull-down and handover

Performance After The First Stock Run

Once commissioned, the freezer reached operating temperature and held it steadily through product loading and normal shift activity. The client saw better stock organisation almost immediately because the room gave them enough usable frozen space to separate incoming product from older stock and reduce congestion at the packing side.

From a day to day point of view, the main gain was consistency. The room now supports higher-volume holding without constant manual adjustments, and the maintenance team has a clear service layout for checks and call-outs. The site also benefits from a better response to brief power interruptions, which matters when frozen goods can be affected in a short space of time.

  • Improved frozen stock capacity
  • More consistent holding temperatures
  • Better access for loading and dispatch
  • Cleaner maintenance access for future servicing

What We Would Do Again On A Similar Job

If we were back on a similar Pinetown factory freezer, we would approach it the same way: proper load assessment first, then room sizing, then equipment selection based on actual use rather than guesswork. That sounds basic, but it saves a lot of trouble once the room is full and production pressure is on.

We would also keep the maintenance thinking in the build stage, not after handover. Good access to valves, controls and the evaporator saves time during service contracts and breakdown call-outs. In KZN, where heat, humidity and load-shedding all have a say in how equipment behaves, the practical details are what keep a freezer room earning its keep.

  • Size the room to the real stock pattern
  • Keep service points accessible
  • Allow for temperature recovery after door openings
  • Plan for local power interruptions from the start

That is the kind of job we know well from factory sites across Durban and the KZN coast. The right freezer room is not just colder, it is easier to use, simpler to maintain and built to suit the way the site actually works.
